Superior ophthalmic vein thrombosis following barosinusitis: a rare case report
Superior ophthalmic vein thrombosis (SOVT) is an extremely rare condition but can result in significant clinical complications. It can arise from both septic and aseptic causes. Common factors contributing to its development include paranasal sinusitis, viral or bacterial infections, allergies, polyps, and, in rare cases, barotrauma. Barotrauma refers to tissue damage or inflammation caused by changes in ambient pressure that are not adequately compensated. Barosinusitis, a type of barotrauma, typically occurs due to alterations in barometric pressure during activities like flying or diving. As altitude increases, the decrease in ambient pressure causes intrasinus air to expand, generating increased pressure. This pressure disparity between the sinus ostia and the nasal cavity, which cannot be equalized, triggers an inflammatory response in the sinus mucosa. With this case, we aim to present a patient who, to the best of our knowledge, is the first reported in the literature to develop SOVT due to barosinusitis.
