Co-Existence of multiple sclerosis and vitiligo in a patient with epithelial map-dot-fingerprint dystrophy
Multiple sclerosis is a chronic demyelinating central nervous system disease that manifests itself with muscle weakness, sensory disturbances and numbness in the extremities, impaired balance, gait, speech, blurred vision and diplopia seen in attacks. A 41-year-old female patient referred to us with the sudden complaints of blurred vision and diplopia in the right gaze. She had been following up with the diagnosis of recurrent corneal erosions and epithelial basement membrane dystrophy in the ophthalmology department for the last three years. In cranial magnetic resonance imaging, there were hyperintense lesions in the bilateral periventricular white matter, which was remarkable in the right hemisphere in T2W scan. She also had acrocephalic vitiligo and multinodular goiter for years. HLA-A2, DRB1*0407, DRB1*1301, DQB1*0301, DQB1*0603 haplotypes were detected. Both autoimmunity and genetic factors may play a role in the co-existence of Multiple sclerosis and vitiligo.
